Directions:
Cut and/or gather fabrics. You will need 16 darks and 16 lights. To make this really scrappy and to add interest, make. sure to have a range of shades, colors, and tones. Match pairs of 5" squares together, right sides together.
Draw Lines for Sewing/Cutting: Once you have all of your fabric cut and matched, you are ready to mark the back of the light fabric for sewing. You will first draw a line down the middle and then a line on each side of the middle line a quarter of an inch over. TIP: I mark these AFTER they are in pairs because I find it makes the fabric units more stable.
Sew: Next, take your units to the sewing machine. Sew on the drawn sewing lines.
Pressing to Set Your Seams: Then press. This is important! Press before you cut them apart to set the seams and relax the threads.
Cut Blocks Apart: After each unit's seams are set, now it is time to cut. You can use scissors or a rotary cutter. It doesn't matter. Simply cut on the middle line. YOU WILL HAVE TWO SETS. Make sure to keep them separate ensuring both with be scrappy. :)
Press Blocks Open: Next, press your half-square triangles open. Finger press them (gently) first, and then use an iron.
Trim Up Blocks: Using a Bloc Loc ruler or a regular ruler with the 45 degree angle marked, trim up your blocks.
Layout Your Blocks: Now for the fun part! Play with the layout and see what designs you can make!
Sew them all together and finish as desired!
