Welcome to Week 20 of our Sewing Organization Challenge!
Let's make everything beautiful, shall we?
Have you ever browsed Pinterest or watched videos that feature other peoples' beautiful sewing rooms? Don't they just have you a sense of peace? That's what I want from my space. Although I am not quite there yet, I am getting there, and I hope this video series is helping you get there, too.
Although there are many components to creating beautiful sewing rooms, one of the important elements we sometimes overlook is decorating. We often collect the cast-off furniture, the old bins from the basement, or the curtains we had in our living room for twenty years and just moved them to our sewing room when we redecorated the living room.
We deserve a beautiful space to create!
So, this week for our organization challenge, we are making things beautiful. Well, maybe not ALL the things--it is only one video after all, but I want to get you started on making your space beautiful.
Check out this week's video:
Here are a few ideas:
Decorate with Quilts
Hang quilts on the walls, drape them over tables as a table cloth, or even over a chair. you can also use an old ladder to display your quilts, which is what I do.
Using an Old Ladder to Display Quilts
This isn't a new idea, that's for sure, but it is a fun idea, nonetheless. I trash-picked this old ladder (yes, you read that right, I trash picked it) and it is perfect for hanging some of my antique quilt on. I can rotate the display and even change the colors, if I want. Because I never painted or sealed this, it use pool noodles to cover the rungs. You can also use plastic wrap or fabric--whatever--just remember to protect your quilts from the wood.
Use Sewing Items to Decorate
Old Sewing Machines, Patterns, and Pages from old Sewing Books
You can pick up old patterns, sewing books, and sewing magazines at thrift shops or garage sales. They are great resources for things like this. In fact, you usually can get intensive frames second-hand too, making this a very inexpensive way to decorate your space. You can also take magazines or patterns to a frame shop and have them professionally framed.
Use a Shadow Box to Display Sewing Notions and More
A shadow box is wonderful way to display some of the things we use as makers. You can put buttons, empty thread spools, fabric salvages, etc. in shadow boxes and make a great display for your sewing space.
Update Your Furniture
Add New Life to Old Things
I have this inexpensive folding chair that I got from a friend. I love using a folding chair as a desk chair because it is easy to fold and store if I need some extra space. To update it, I covered it with fabric salvages, creating a really cool element to my sewing room. Re-covering a chair or painting a piece of furniture can really make the space look spectacular!
